Wow! These two books (1st and 2nd Kings) were kind of depressing. I've never read through these two books before and I always remember thinking "hmm, I wonder what those could be about?" Now, obviously, I knew it had something to do with Kings, but I really didn't expect a list of a bunch of kings. Not only kings, but pretty much 90% were horrible. I was not expecting that. If I learned anything from reading these books it is how much God must love us. I mean truly. I can't tell you how many times I read "and he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord". It had to be like 100,000. And God loved them. These men hurt God with their shrines and prostitutes and idols and He still loved them. And He loves us. I was thinking, as I was reading, "man these guys are awful", but then I realized we have our own 21st century version of these sins. We idolize people, we hate people, we covet and are gluttouness, we commit sin in our hearts when we wish pain on people or do something we know we shouldn't do or even when we drink a little too much. Maybe our sin doesn't look the same as theirs, but it is still sin. And God doesn't see any sin any worse than the next (James 2:10), so we with our obsession with weight or marriage or technology or even reading (ouch!) are just as bad! It makes me sad that I hurt God. It makes me sad that their are people out their that don't want to believe in Him and hurt Him. I'm sorry for what I have done/said or will do/say. I know that as a human I can never be perfect and I will continue to sin, but I know that God loves us and He rewards those who love Him. That is another theme I saw in these books. God rewarded King David with having his family on the throne for generations, even though He knew they would be wicked. He loved David that much for worshipping and being obedient that He did that for him. God is amazing. His love is indescribable and beautiful and more than any of us deserve.
